Privacy policy — Aloud Reader Split Search
Last updated: October 12, 2026
Aloud Reader Split Search (“the extension”) opens a search engine or AI assistant in a pane beside the Aloud Reader web app, in the same browser tab, and hands the text or image you selected to it.
What the extension handles
| Data | Why | Where it goes |
|---|---|---|
| The text or image you select in the reader and choose to search | To run your search or question in the provider you picked | Directly from your browser to that provider (Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo, Perplexity, ChatGPT, Claude). Images are held only in the browser’s in-memory session storage (never written to disk), are usable for at most two minutes, and are deleted once attached; anything left over is discarded when the browser session ends. |
| Cookies of the provider sites the pane can show | So the pane shows you signed in with your existing session | Stay in your browser. The extension reads them only to re-create them with a different SameSite attribute while a pane is open, and restores the original attribute when the pane closes. Cookie values are not copied anywhere, logged, or transmitted. |
| Your pane preferences (side, width) | To remember your layout | Stored locally in the browser (chrome.storage.local). |
| The address (origin) of the reader tab | To limit every change below to the tab that opened the pane | Not stored beyond the open pane; never transmitted. |
Temporary changes to browser behaviour
While at least one pane is open, and only for the sites the pane can show (the search engines and AI assistants listed in the extension’s source), the extension:
- removes the headers those sites use to forbid being shown inside another page (such as
X-Frame-Options), and adds the isolation headers Chrome requires for them to load inside the reader, only for frames in tabs that have a pane open; - adds a Chrome cookie setting allowing those sites’ third-party cookies only when the top-level page is the reader, so your existing sign-in works in the pane, including in Incognito windows.
All of this is reverted when the last pane closes, and the cookie setting is cleared again when the browser starts.
What the extension does not do
- It has no server and sends nothing to its developer.
- It contains no analytics, telemetry, advertising or tracking.
- It does not sell, rent or share user data, and no human reads it.
- It does not use data for creditworthiness, lending or any purpose other than the single purpose above.
- It does not load or run remote code.
Limited Use
The extension’s use of information received from Chrome APIs adheres to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
Third-party sites
Once a provider loads in the pane, that provider’s own privacy policy governs what it does with what you type or select there.
